NDDGA Course Design Group
We have seen an explosion of new disc golf courses in the recent years, and a doubling of courses here in ND in the past 3 years. North Dakota is expected to surpass 30 basket or pole-hole disc golf courses by the end of 2008. Having an experienced course designer help you get your project off the ground is very valuable and can be the difference between have a course that people will travel to your city to play or will avoid because of problems with poor quality design.
Q: Why use a course designer, can't anyone design a disc golf course? After all it is just throwing a Frisbee at a target, right?
A: Having an experienced disc golf course designer is beneficial in many ways, including:
- Safety issues. Concerns for safety are generally not addressed by those unfamiliar or less experienced with course design. Often, local Parks and Recreation Departments will put in a course with little regard to other park infrastructure, or more importantly, other park users who could be injured by and errant throw. An experienced designer will strive to make sure that the course is safe for disc golfers as well as other park users.
- Course layouts. Many times we see courses that basically involve throwing the same shot over and over. While a good designer will always try to make the course fun, the course should have a good balance of different shots that will challenge the thrower no matter what level of player they are.
- Experience. An experienced designer will be able to design a course that will allow for easy expansion and multiple configurations that can challenge all levels of players.
We also have a wide variety of literature and resources available to help you get your disc golf course project of the ground. Please do not hesitate to call for all of your disc golf course design needs.
