Discers of ND,
This is Joey giving a little update on the Fargo side of things for the 2010 season. At the conclusion of last year and with Fargo's abysmal showing of tournaments, I started brainstorming about tournaments for the upcoming year. I originally wanted to run a tournament in late May/early June. Guess what? Flooding is almost assuredly going to take care of any tournament in Fargo at that time of year. However, I do have access to some wonderful land within 30 miles of Fargo which would be absolutely prime for a big tournament setting and has no chance of flooding. Unfortunately, I do not think that will work either, because I have signed up for summer school and am also working full-time, leaving precious little for disc golf time in the early goings of the season, especially when the course needs to be built from scratch, is temporary, and is 30 miles away.
Next comes the option of running a tournament in late July or September, because it would be nice to give the State Tournament some breathing room. Then comes the factor that Fargo just does not have tournament caliber courses at it's disposal. I have grown up on Oak Grove and Woodlawn Parks, but those courses simply do not meet my standards when it comes to putting on a high-caliber tournament. There is a definite ability for temporary baskets and alternate tee-pads at Oak Grove, much like Darrell and the Fargo Gang set up for the State Tournament, but the course is getting more and more deteriorated all of time because of water damage, treefall and overuse. Perhaps a tournament there, but no promises.
Why not have it at the amazing piece of land 30 miles out of Fargo? Because that land does not get mowed and can only be played in the early summer months. Hopefully all goes well for schooling this year and I can run it in May/Early June 2011 out there, because the land is way too cool to go to waste. The Floodplain Open in 2008 took place and was a grand success in Fargo/Moorhead, but I was told by the city of Moorhead that some of the land used during the tournament would never again be able to be used by disc golf, period. That said, Moorhead has passed the installation of a few of the holes at the Floodplain location (12 holes) and it will be in this Summer. We may have a ribbon cutting type tournament there, but that is on the Minnesota side and does not pertain to this site.
We are currently working on the Fargo Park district to install a high-quality course with some challenge to draw in players from areas other than Fargo and it sounds promising. However, those plans aren't coming until next year at the earliest. If Fargo was equipped with some nice land and courses like Dickinson, Bismarck/Mandan, Jamestown, and Grand Forks, I would be more than willing to run a couple of tournaments. The bummer part is that we simply do not have any land or courses in the city limits that beg to have a tournament thrown on them and it takes a ton of effort to put up temporary baskets/tee signs/tees/shelters/etc. and cut through all the red tape of disc golf stigma to run a tournament at an unestablished area.
In summary, I do not know what I will be offering to disc golf this year in the Fargo area as far as tournaments. Most of my efforts are probably going to be taking place on the "showing Park Boards about the benefits of disc golf" end of the spectrum. I hate seeing the area of the state with the most disc golfers go to waste. I just want to say thank you to the people that have run tournaments in the past and those doing so this year. It takes a whole lot of work and there is little kickback for the large efforts. Hopefully I can join you this year in the disc golf crusade, but no guarantees.
Later.
